Condor Week 2007

MONDAY, APRIL 30, 2007 - THURSDAY, MAY 3, 2007

MADISON, WISCONSIN

New Negotiation Features

On Tuesday, May 1st of CondorWeek 2007 ,  Jason Stowe presented a new set of features that enable efficient resource allocation for use cases commonly found in Enterprise environments. These features enable preemption policies that respect group quota allocations.

Prior to the work described in this talk, within the negotiation cycle it was impossible to know the current state of accounting group quotas within Condor PREEMPTION_REQUIREMENTS expressions. Now, using new settings SubmitterGroupQuota SubmitterGroupResourcesInUse, and the corresponding RemoteGroupQuota and RemoteGroupResourcesInUse, PREEMPTION_REQUIREMENTS expressions can get access to accountant information, enabling policies that exactly respect a group's quota.

Enterprise Features for Condor

During CondorWeek 2006 ,  Jason Stowe of Cycle Computing, presented a community-centric way of  enabling enterprises to get features added to Condor , including Configuration with Pipes, using close coordination with the Condor team at the University of Wisconsin.

The first feature added to Condor using this new pipeline is a new feature for obtaining configuration data from sources other than files, called Configuration with Pipes (CWP). Configuration with Pipes will allow users to leverage tools available to them to send configuration information into Condor. This will alleviate one of the most frequent problems with Condor installations in an enterprise: managing configuration and the associated files.

CWP favors a pull-mechanism where configurations are pulled when needed by Condor via a configurable command-line interface. Prior solutions to the configuration problem involved cumbersome work-arounds where another daemon or process would be running in parallel to Condor, then writing to the local drive when signalled via the network.

Although motivated by Commercial users of Condor, Configuration with Pipes benefits the condor community as a whole, and enables users to take advantage of unique tools they may have available to provide configuration to Condor.  As discussed in the presentation, it is being developed in cooperation with the Condor Project at the University of Wisconsin, using a model proposed by Miron Livny.

Condor Week 2005

MONDAY, MARCH 14, 2005 - FRIDAY, MARCH 18, 2005

MADISON, WISCONSIN

Using Condor in Movie Pipelines

During the Condor Week 2005,  Jason Stowe presented prior work for optimizing the use of Condor in a movie production.

This presentation covers the use of Condor's priority features and Accounting Groups to implement distributed resource management policies based upon a movie production's needs. It also covers several techniques for minimizing negotiation time for large sets of jobs on a heavily utilized Condor pool, and helping scalability of a large Condor implementation.

Cycle Computing brings this expertise to help clients utilize Condor for stable, lower cost of ownership grid computing. For more information about using Condor in enterprise environments, contact us. This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
